This morning, I have a fun post to share with you all. I’m a part of a new campaign with GNC called the “Total Lean Challenge,” which is a 12-week lifestyle program that includes nutrition, meal plans, workouts and video instruction, and community support.
For each week of the challenge, one of us is asked to share a fun new workout, along with various tips, tricks, and resources for various aspects of health and wellness. Today, my post is going to focus on one of my favorite things…
Healthy alternatives to less healthy foods
Now you guys know me…I’m a huge advocate for eating the real deal, but I also enjoy some healthier alternatives from time to time because, let’s face it…if we indulged in the real deal ALL the time, then we’d probably be feeling pretty crappy, sluggish, and blah.
So let’s start with pizza, for example.
Pizza is probably one of the biggest calorie bombs out there, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it in other ways! Try making a “crust” out of a whole wheat pita or tortilla. Top with some sauce, a bunch of your favorite veggies (for an added nutritional boost) some protein (chicken sausage for me!), and a little mozzarella cheese. Easy as pizza pie.
Another favorite comfort food of mine would most definitely have to be a big bowl of chicken and broccoli alfredo. Because I mean, really…what’s not to love?
But thankfully, there a ton of healthy swaps you can make:
- Most traditional alfredo sauces come loaded with heavy cream and cheese. Try using my skinny alfredo sauce, which swaps in healthy Greek yogurt for much of the heavy stuff.
- Bulk up the good stuff (i.e., the chicken and the broccoli) which are both going to give you the most nutritional value.
- Make smart choices with your pasta…stick with an actual serving (then load up on the other stuff!) and opt for whole wheat.
- Looking to cut back on the carbs? Swap in spaghetti squash for your pasta. It’s just as delicious (and is in the photo above).
So what about sweets??
Well, as you guys probably know…I have a bit of a sweet tooth. You can count on me having some sort of sweet almost daily, but I also have a few favorites that aren’t quite as loaded in the calorie department.
I probably make these at least once ever 1-2 months, and they are not only easy, but super tasty, too. The mashed banana helps you cut back on added fats, and they’re just as delicious when made with whole wheat flour and good quality dark chocolate. They’re also soft, more like little muffins than cookies, but they are great at satisfying a sweet tooth.
Another new favorite evening dessert of mine would have to be this little concoction.
While I don’t think they’ll ever be anything better than a bowl of ice cream, this little dessert is certainly a great substitution. Just mix a container of Greek yogurt of choice (I like vanilla), mix in about a tablespoon of peanut butter, and top with about a tablespoon of chocolate chips (you can also feel free to crumble some TJ’s cat cookies like me).
I first got this idea from Colleen, and have been loving it ever since. It’s SO good!
And finally, one last favorite of mine (which can arguably be labeled “healthy” depending on what you define as healthy), are these soda cupcakes.
Rather than add in all the oil and eggs, you simply mix a box of your favorite cake mix with 12oz. of your favorite diet soda (like I said…these could be argued as healthy…I don’t judge either way!). Be sure to check out this post for some delicious cake + soda combos.

Cream cheese fruit dip v. Peanut butter yogurt dip
Better choice: Peanut butter yogurt dip
1c. Greek yogurt
2 Tb Powdered peanut butter
1 Tb honey
Peanut butter balls v. protein power balls
Better choice: Protein power balls
2 1/2c. natural peanut butter
1 3/4c. honey
3 scoops chocolate whey protein powder
3c. dry oatmeal
2c. flax cereal
1c. mini chocolate chips
Mix PB, honey and protein powder together, put in microwave 30-45 sec til smooth and slightly runny. Pour over oats, flax cereal, coconut and stir well. Fold in chocolate chips and spread in 9吉 pan and refrigerate
The hidden brownie makeover: Avocado Brownies
1 Medium avocado
3 medium eggs
1 cup whole wheat flour (I used almond meal flour)
1/2c. unsweetened cocoa powder
1/3c hot water
1 Tbsp vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract
6oz vanilla yogurt (I used 2% plain greek yogurt)
5 packets stevia
3Tbsp dark chocolate chips
3Tb honey or agave

It was reported in 2015 that Americans are now eating many more “healthy foods” than 20 years ago. That is something to be happy about! There are similar trends reported in some other modern westernized nations like the UK and Canada. We have come to realize that the all the indulgences we have been giving ourselves come mealtime are lined to the dramatic rise in chronic health problems like cancer and diabetes, heart disease and obesity, which have accompanied modern food manufacturing processes.
The fact remains, however, that processed food is much more readily available than healthier alternatives. Coupled with massive media campaigns that profess unhealthy food as good for us as well as the addictively delicious chemicals and additives that are placed in highly processed food, it makes it very difficult to choose the right thing to eat, when the wrong thing is so appealing.
In some cases, it is not a lack of desire to eat healthily that leads to bad food choices. Sometimes you simply become overwhelmed by the prevalence and power of junk food. You try to eat smart, but social and marketing influences make it easy to give into addictions created by unhealthy chemicals and additives placed in the junk food and fast food you eat. placed there intentionally to create an unhealthy addiction.
You want to eat healthy. You know what healthy foods are. Unfortunately, years of turning to less than healthy food has tricked your mind and taste buds into believing you simply must eat this highly processed food, which you know is causing you health problems. Below I cover 7 popular food items I'm referring to as "junk food" since they have little or no nutritional value, and deliver many toxins, poisons, and harmful additives and chemicals. Even small changes, replacing a few of the following unhealthy foods at a time with healthier choices, can lead to noticeable benefits.
Chips made from kale and your favorite vegetables make an incredibly nutritious alternative to the salty, high calorie chips you love. Kale leaves lightly baked with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil, and drizzled with sea salt or Himalayan pink salt, crunch just like potato chips. Then of course, there is the fact that kale delivers at least 10% of 7 different minerals the body needs. Just 1 cup of cooked kale delivers all the vitamin A you need in a day, 71% of your vitamin C allowance, and a whopping 12 times the vitamin K your body requires.
You also receive from 4-9% of your daily recommended allowance of 12 other minerals, vitamins and nutrients, including 4 of the B vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and omega-3 fatty acids. You can also make potato chip replacements with any of your other favorite vegetables. Slice thin, drizzle, sprinkle with some healthy salt, and bake. This way you get nutrition and an incredibly low number of calories, instead of high calories and no nutrition.
You can also turn to health food stores, and possibly your favorite grocer, for healthy alternatives to traditional chips. The appropriately named LesserEvil puffed potatoes make crunchy chips that come in a variety of flavors. PopChips are popped, rather than baked or fried, which the company says provides better flavor while using half the fat. No preservatives, harmful color additives or fake flavors are used in PopChips. Just remember that when you cook your own chip alternatives at home, with fresh fruits and vegetables, this will always be the smartest and healthiest swap you can make.

Make your own tomato sauce at home, so you can create a tasty paste with healthy ingredients. There is truly no end to the healthy pizza dough swaps you can make, as long as you stick with fresh vegetables and your own creative mind. Where it makes sense on this swap list, we will recommend retail and grocery store purchases. As far as frozen pizzas concerned, almost all of them should be avoided.
Whenever you crave for something really sweet and you are about to grab your box of chocolates, try swapping it for some fruits.
